What are the different types of EV Charger and what do they mean?

When it comes to EV Charging points, there are three different speeds that are determined by different power outputs that your charging point can deal with. These are Rapid, Fast, and Slow.

Rapid Chargers are found in public places like shopping centres, motorway service stations and other easily accessible areas that are best used by people on long journeys. A great example of these are the Tesla Super Chargers which can fully charge a vehicle in just over 30 minutes.

The next one down from that are the Fast Chargers which tend to be the standard for both home and business charging. These can charge a vehicle to full power in a few hours, obviously depending on the rating of that charging point and your vehicle’s specifications. The average power output for one of these types of chargers is 7kw which within 8 hours should charge most vehicles to 100%.

Slow chargers are rarely used outside of emergency situations as they can take up to and over 12 hours to charge a vehicle. Most of these slow charging units can output roughly 3kW which is why they aren’t as commonly used. It can be done using a typical 3-pin plug like you’d find at home but as it takes so long it’d take we recommend getting a different plug to stop it from overloading the power in your house.

What plugs and adapters are available for your EV Charger?

Chargers and plugs are split into Type 1 and Type 2 with most vehicles in Europe compatible with Type 2 but with some manufacturers based in Asia still using Type 1. The short version is that Type 2 will give you a faster charging time than a Type 1.

Type 1 plugs tend to have 5 pins which gives a power output of up to 7.4kW with Type 2 plugs having 7 which can give you up to 22kW at home and all the way to a whopping 43kW of output at a commercial space. We’d recommend going Type 2 wherever possible so you can get the fastest charging possible wherever you plug in.
